Storytelling, passion, and a celebration of curiosity & wonder are continuous motifs that Julian Ray, New York City based interdisciplinary artist & designer, fuses in aiming to build a world of depth and discovery within each of his works.
Ray specializes in Product Design and Fiction Writing, with a background rooted in industrial design, literature, architecture, music and cultural studies, as well as having worked with creators such as installation artists and filmmakers.
Throughout his designs, Julian uses a composite of approaches from hand crafting, sculpting, drawing, modeling, and fabricating to digital practices including CAD, rendering, and various methods of machine fabrication. Navigating a multiplicity of disciplines, he builds a unique rhythm into his work.
"I view design as a practice where developing a chair is no different from a world and its characters within, from twenty four frames per second, from harmonies through a stanza. All creative forms communicate with the user– the people– and are absorbed into themselves, their understanding of the world around them. With this in mind, I often start exploring a project from a hybrid language-visual perspective, where storytelling and design feed each other."
Ray believes that an interdisciplinary approach to design, revolving around immersive engagement, can result in the presence of audience elevating the work presented and vice versa. Within his space, imagination can come to life outside of fictional pages, and physical artifacts can build worlds.
Welcome to the collection.
