Julian Ray, is a New York City based interdisciplinary designer specializing in Product Design and Fiction Writing. Storytelling, passion, curiosity, and depth are motifs he combines aiming to build a world behind each of his works.
Ray has an extensive background in literary studies, industrial and utilitarian design, music and culture foci, as well as personal experience working with professional creators such as installation artists and film execs.
In his design work, Julian uses a composite of approaches from digital techniques such as CAD modeling, rendering, and machine fabrication to hand crafting, drawing, and sculpting.
"I view design as a practice where developing a chair is no different than a world and its characters within it, than twenty four frames per second, than harmonies through a stanza. All of these creative forms communicate with the user– the people– and are absorbed into themselves and their understanding of the world around them. With this in mind, I often start exploring a project from a hybrid language-visual perspective, where my writing and design sides build off each other."
Ray believes that an interdisciplinary approach to design revolving around immersive engagement can result in the presence of audience elevating the work presented and vice versa. Here, imagination can come to life outside of fictional pages, and physical artifacts can build worlds.
