In this lamp, a beam of light provided by an LED is lifting up its "light sail" made of a hand-turned solid sphere of maple and 22 gauge steel. The sail rotates around itself via steel rods installed on its underside. To rotate around the sphere, ball bearings are installed at the points of contact and secondary rods protrude into the sphere. The utilitarian sculpture mimics the imagery of electrons around a nucleus. This luminaire pays homage to the intersection of scientific innovation and industrial design. As it is a fully functioning light lamp, the motion and energy is shot down from the atomic shade into the concrete base, which alone weighs approximately 25 pounds. The base’s service as a visual and structural grounding point provides a proudness to the luminaire, an unapologetic reason for its existence. overall dimensions: 23” x 22” x 69.5” led light dimensions: 1” x 1” x 55”
